Studio Stories PDF Print E-mail
in progress Charles Darwin School have put a lot of development time into building the ideal studio for both school and professional use.

We started off by looking at many commercial studios in London and came across a studio designer who felt he could maximise the schools budget for the project and build a studio to stand out from the rest.

John Flynn (ADG) having designed studios for George Michael and Abbey Road Studios (EMI Records Limited) was brought onboard along with music wiring expert Bill Ward (Langdale Technical Consulting) who worked for and cabled Sarm Studios. Viking Projects were brought onboard as the building contractors who had build a studio before along with Michael Hartnett (ACS) who specialists in Studio Climate Control. Kevin Dibble (Instacomm) was responsible for CCTV and Network Services. The Team was formed and the project was ready to roll.

The Studio has been built using construction methods found in studios many times the size (and price).

The studio has 3 main areas:

  • Contol Room
  • Live Room
  • Isolation Booth

All 3 areas are built on their own independent floating floors soundproofed with double (tripple-layer) walls with dead space and insulation in-between the two walls, forming a room-within-a-room.

We have carefully used absorption and diffusion materials on the surfaces of the rooms, and also paid consideration to the physical dimensions of the room itself, in order to make the room respond to sound in a desired way.

The equipment itself has been carefully picked to give us cutting edge recording equipment. At the hub sits an Apple Intel Mac Pro running Pro Tools 7 - Digidesign Protools HD3 Accel and controlled by the Digidesign Control 24 Control Surface.
