This term saw the arrival of Cre8ive to film “TV in a Week“. This was another fantastic
opportunity for both staff and students across the whole school to work together and in
different, perhaps sometimes more active or creative ways, to present their subject area. The
live broadcast saw the entire school glued to the screen and the professionalism of all who
worked with Cre8ive to produce such a quality piece was remarkable. What an opportunity
for our students and staff! |

Lastterm saw our third whole school Arts Week. Evaluations on the week are complete and the overwhelming
story is that it was a success. From the staff’s point of view it was an opportunity to spend time with students in
different environments working on different projects and activities. Staff commented on the value of working
cross-curricular, using acting and other Creative Arts techniques. Pupils have been very positive, enjoying the
theatre experiences enormously as well as, again, the opportunity to work in a different way. Some of the
activities particularly mentioned by pupils as being valuable were the Human Rights activities and the anti-smoking
presentation and workshops! Both staff and pupils would like to see more trips and we will bear this in mind
when planning this year’s Arts Week although, as always, Arts Week is an extremely costly activity and the £20
parental contribution by no means covers the cost of the week. We are extremely grateful for our Arts College
status in having the opportunity to provide such a diverse and exciting end to the term. |

Global Rock Challenge: Hackney Empire |
|
|
|
|
We had a fantastic day on 1st May at the Hackney Empire. After four intense weeks of putting our performance together we were finally ready to compete in the Rock Challenge London event. In the morning we practiced in front of the other competing groups and we met one of our own past teachers who now works for Lambeth Academy, Ella Simmons.
The evening event was spectacular and the standard was very high. Kieran Power represented the school with confidence along with his co-hosts Jessie Stacey, Aimee Haywood, Leandro Kaienga and Lianne Wilkinson, and explained our theme for the performance. The whole team were amazing and were a credit to our school. One judge commented on the fact that the storyline drew her in making her want to see more. Another judge described the performance as breathtaking.

Musical Mindz Enterprize: Charity Concert |
|
|
|
|
On 28th April, Year 10 Student Voice, Musical Minds Enterprize, organised a charity concert in raising funds for their charity, Harvest Help. Harvest Help works with thousands of farmers in Africa, helping them to feed their families, earn a living and become self-reliant. See www.harvesthelp.org for more information.
This was a showcase of many firsts!!! Newcomer Sila Ecrument put in a confident performance with “I Can’t Live”. The audience were also treated to new rising stars in the form of Shevannah Mulcahy and Sammy Lee, with their version of “Ain’t No Mountain Higher”.
Two schools, The Valence School and Hayes offered their support in this worthwhile project and the show opened on an upbeat with Tasheena Livingston, Gaby Ward, Kirsty Young, Mollie Davis, Ben Edgett, Joshua Ivins and Jake Graham from the Valence School performing “The Little Red Rap” to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. Hayes School provided us with two talented singers, Chloe Ward and Hannah Coldspring. Both schools were warmly welcomed by Musical Minds Enterprize and hopefully these links will become the norm for future concerts at Charles Darwin School.
